Negotiating a job offer when you're eager, or even desperate, for a new role can feel intimidating. But negotiation isn’t just about money. It’s about alignment. About making sure the opportunity supports your life, your values, and your long-term goals.
When I was in final interviews for a leadership role with a new employer, I had a decision to make:
I wanted the job, and I also knew the realities of the work load and schedule requirements. So I approached the conversation openly, honestly, and strategically.
🛠️ Here’s what helped:
🔹 Know your non-negotiables.
For me, it wasn’t just about salary, it was about ensuring logistics and expectations were sustainable.
🔹 Frame your asks as mutual benefits.
I positioned my requests in terms of how they would support my effectiveness in the role, not just my personal convenience.
🔹 Time it right.
I waited until I was deeper into the process, once interest was clearly mutual. That gave me more leverage and confidence to speak up.
💡 And remember: You can negotiate more than just money.
Ask about flexibility, professional development, work from home and travel stipends, or even role clarity.
💬 What’s one thing you wish you had negotiated in a past offer?
